The Private Island of Parrot Cay

Parrot Cay is a unique island in the Turks and Caicos, with its history as an upscale vacation destination and retreat for the rich and famous starting with Austrian Count Ferdinand Czernin, who wanted a place to escape to from New York. In the latter 1960s and 1970s, the island began to see the development of the resort and some of the private vacation homes owned by celebrities.

The name Parrot Cay is thought to have been derived from Pirate Cay, a term that hearkens back to when Parrot Cay, Pine Cay, Fort George Cay, and Dellis Cay were a haven for pirates and privateers in the Turks and Caicos.

Getting to Parrot Cay

Parrot Cay is found in the string of scenic cays between Providenciales and North Caicos, and is about 25 minutes from Providenciales via passenger ferry. The resort typically arranges ferry transport for all its guests. Parrot Cay Resort run their own vessels, which depart from a private dock at Leeward.

Parrot Cay is the only inhabited island in the Turks and Caicos that doesn’t have an airstrip or airport. The cay is located adjacent to North Caicos, so it’s easy to make the quick hop over. North Caicos and Middle Caicos are connected by a road causeway, and both islands are exceptional day trip destinations.

The Beaches at Parrot Cay Resort

On its northern coast, Parrot Cay is home to several excellent beaches, the finest section of which is located on the northeastern edge of the island and fronting the main resort complex. This exquisite spot offers shallow and crystal-clear ocean, with a network of sandbars, making it one of the most picturesque coastal areas in the Turks and Caicos.

The western side of Parrot Cay’s coast continues as a beautiful beach, with the occasional rock outcropping and snorkeling reef.

Private Island Resorts

The Turks and Caicos is home to a few private islands and exclusive resorts, which are comparable in spirit to Parrot Cay Resort.

The Pine Cay Resort on nearby Pine Cay isn’t quite as extensive as Parrot Cay Resort, yet offers much the same seclusion, and an incredible beach.

Ambergris Cay Resort, located on the remote and private island of Ambergris Cay in the Caicos Banks, offers much of the same seclusion and elegance as Parrot Cay.

Amanyara on Providenciales and Sailrock on South Caicos are not on private cays, yet are remote, secluded, and feature a full collection of amenities and services.
