The Beach
The beach at Northwest Point is essentially the final reaches of Blue Hills Beach. Like all beaches in the Turks and Caicos, this coast offers its own character. Water depth tends to be shallow, and dense seagrass beds and shoals start close off the beach. Typically, ocean conditions are relatively calm, as the bay in the area is protected by the barrier reef offshore.
Snorkeling is quite interesting in the seagrass. There isn’t much coral to be seen, yet there are many small creatures, conch, turtles, and stingrays. Excellent reefs and snorkeling can be seen a few miles up the coast in the national park.
The Northwest Point Marine National Park
Northwest Point Resort is located near the northeastern boundary of the Northwest Point Marine National Park, which protects a significant area of barrier reefs, coastlines, and interior bay reefs. Wildlife sightings can be impressive, and it’s typical to see ospreys and brown pelicans, and sharks in the ocean.
A counterpart to the marine national park is the inland Northwest Point Pond Nature Reserve, which is an isolated saline pond system, found a few miles up the coast from the resort. The outer muddy pond in the nature reserve often shelters wading and coastal birds, including reddish egrets, tricolored herons, stilts, and many smaller birds. On occasion, Caribbean flamingos, roseate spoonbills, and cormorants may also be seen.
